Most runs by a batter in a Test match

Test cricket is the purest and the oldest format of the game. The first match in Test history was played way back in the year 1877 between Australia and England. Even after the introduction of other formats like ODIs and T20Is, the longest format still remains the preferred and favourite format for many cricketers. Scoring runs is one thing and aggregating most runs in a complete match is another. Batters have enjoyed notching up majority runs in a match in the past.

3.Kumar Sangakkara (424)

One of the best Test cricketers of all time, former Sri Lanka batter Kumar Sangakkara occupies the third spot in this list. The left-handed Sri Lankan amassed 424 runs in a Test match against Bangladesh in Chattogram in the year 2014. In the first innings of the game, Sangakkara hammered a triple century. He mustered 319 runs off 482 deliveries with the help of 32 fours and eight maximums. He batted for a record 551 minutes at the crease. In the second innings, the former Lankan captain scored 105 runs off 144 balls which included 11 fours and two sixes. Match got drawn and Sangakkara was declared as the Player of the Match as well as the series.

2.Mark Taylor (426)

Former Australia skipper Mark Taylor struck a massive 424 runs in a match against Pakistan in Peshawar in 1998. Opening the innings while batting first, Taylor notched up a triple hundred against the likes of Shoaib Akhtar and Mushtaq Ahmed. He scored an unbeaten 334 runs off 564 deliveries in 720 minutes, which included 32 fours and a solitary six. It is the joint-highest score by any Australian in away Tests. In the second innings, the left-handed batter smashed 92 runs off 159 balls which included 11 fours. The match got drawn as Taylor was adjudged with the Player of the Match award.

1.Graham Gooch (456)

Graham Gooch holds the record for scoring the most runs in a Test. Former England skipper also smashed a triple century against India at Lords in 1990. He scored 333 runs off 485 balls in 628 minutes with the help of 43 fours and three sixes. After the triple ton, Gooch slammed another hundred in the second innings as he amassed quickfire 123 runs in 113 balls, which included 13 fours and four sixes as England beat India.
