Most expensive ODI overs
Few batters have taken the liking of a bowler in an over in one-day internationals as they went for full monty against them in the format. These players went berserk and tonked the bowlers to all parts of the ground in the six deliveries that they faced. In this article, we look at the three most expensive overs in the history of the 50-overs format.
Let’s take a look at the most expensive overs in ODI cricket:
3. 34 by Jason Holder in 2015 and Thisara Perera in 2019
In the 2015 World Cup, West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder suffered the wrath of a destructive AB de Villiers as he hammered him for 34 runs in an over. The Proteas batted first and in the 48th over, Holder conceded four fours, two maximums, two doubles, and as many no-balls. South Africa finished with 408/5 with AB scoring 162* off 66 in Sydney.
Similarly, Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera whacked as many runs against James Neesham in Mount Maunganui in 2019 in the first match of the series. Neesham struck five sixes in the 49th over of the innings a single, double, and a no-ball. Neesham ended up with an unbeaten 47 off just 13.
2. 35 by Robin Peterson in 2013
Former Proteas spinner Robin Peterson is the second name on this unwanted chart as he went for 35 runs against Sri Lanka’s Perera in an ODI in Pallekele in 2013. Chasing 224 for victory, Perera came in to bat at no. 8 and smashed Peterson for five maximums and a four in the 33rd over. The spinner leaked a wide to round off the total to 35. The Sri Lankan finished his innings with 65 off 49 which included five fours and as many sixes.
1. 36 by Daan van Bunge in 2007 and Gaudi Toka in 2021
South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs created history when he became the first batter to slam six sixes in an over in ODIs. He achieved the feat against Netherlands spinner Daan van Bunge in the 2007 World Cup match in Basseterre. Proteas batted first in 40-overs per side match and Gibbs hammered six maximums in the 30th over. He ended up with 72 off 40 with four fours and seven sixes.
USA batter Jaskaran Malhotra matched Gibbs’s feat when he also smacked six sixes in an over off the bowling of PNG’s Gaudi Toka in Al Amerat in 2021. In the last over of USA’s innings, Malhorta went berserk to hit six straight maximums and ended up with 173* off 124 with four fours and 16 maximums.
