Most doubles of Century and five-wicket hauls in ODIs
All-rounders play a huge role in the setup of a team in any particular format. They bring a perfect balance and a different dimension to the side with their all-round skills of both batting and bowling. They offer runs and then roll their arms over to pick wickets that help a team immensely. In the one-day international format, scoring a century and picking up a five-wicket haul is the stuff of dreams for any all-rounder and to date, only four players have managed to achieve the double as they feature in this article.
Let’s take a look at the instances of a hundred and a five-for in the ODI format (Only 4):
1.Vivian Richards (119 and 5/41)
Former West Indian Vivian Richards was the first player to grab the double feat of smashing a century and picking up a five-wicket haul in an ODI. He did the job against New Zealand in Dunedin in 1987. In the first match of the series, the visitors batted first and skipper Richards came in to bat at no. five. The right-hander struck 119 off 113 with ten fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 105.30. Courtesy of his knock, Windies reached a total of 237/9 in 50 overs. He then delivered with the ball as he picked up figures of 5/41 in his ten-over spell. West Indies won the contest by a margin of 95 runs as Richards grabbed the Player of the Match award.
2.Paul Collingwood (112* and 6/31)
Former England all-rounder Paul Collingwood got the milestone in the fourth match of the Tri-Series held between England, Australia, and Bangladesh in England in 2005. Batting first against the Bangla Tigers, Collingwood came in to bat at no. five and hammered an unbeaten 112 off just 86 with the help of ten fours and five maximums at a strike rate of 130.23. Andrew Strauss also hit 152 as England posted a huge total of 391/4. Collingwood then showcased his bowling skills with figures of 6/31 with one maiden in his ten-over spell as Bangladesh got bowled out for just 223. Notably, he won the Player of the Match award for his dual heroics.
3.Rohan Mustafa (109 and 5/25)
United Arab Emirates (UAE) skipper Rohan Mustafa put on a heroic performance against Papua New Guinea (PNG) in Abu Dhabi in 2017. In the third match of the series, UAE batted first and opener Mustafa slammed 109 off 125, which included seven fours and one maximum at a strike rate of 87.20. He led his side from the front as UAE reached a total of 251/9. The right-arm off-break bowler then picked up figures of 5/25 in just 8.2 overs as PNG got bundled out for a mere 148 as UAE won the contest by 103 runs.
4.Bas de Leede (123 and 5/52)
Netherlands all-rounder Bas de Leede got the feat against Scotland in Match eight of the Super Sixes round of the recently concluded ICC World Cup Qualifiers. Scotland batted first and posted a total of 277/9 on the board. de Leede took a five-for (5/52) in his ten-over spell. Batting at no. four, he hammered 123 off just 92 with seven fours and five maximums at a strike rate of 133.69. The Dutch reached their target in 42.5 overs as they won the contest by four wickets to eliminate Scotland and also qualify for the World Cup later this year in India.
