Most away Test wins as captain

Lloyd

Captaining in Test cricket is a tedious task and a leader should have a tactically sound mindset to excel at this format. While registering Test series wins is an art for any captain, it is to win away from home that counts more as the advantages of playing in front of a home crowd in known conditions are absent to exploit. Without further ado, here’s a look at three of those eminent names.

3. Ricky Ponting (19)

Ricky Ponting occupies the third position on this elite list. ‘Punter’ has led the Aussies to 19 Test victories away IN the longest format. His Test captaincy career, however, ended with a loss against arch-rivals England at home in the 2010/11 Ashes series. India is the only place where Ricky Ponting failed as Test captain. The 2004/05 series was won under his deputy Adam Gilchrist.

2. Graeme Smith (22)

Graeme Smith is arguably the best captain of all time and has led the ‘Rainbow Nation’ to unattained heights. Under his tenure, the Proteas have succeeded in registering 22 away Test victories. India is the only place Smith & Co. could not conquer. However, it can also be argued that Smith’s captaincy highs in the longest format were completely overshadowed by Ricky Ponting and his all-conquering Australian team.

1. Clive Lloyd (23)

The legendary captain Sir Clive Lloyd led the West Indies cricket to unprecedented heights during the 70s and 80s. Lloyd, who had led the Windies to their first two World Cup triumphs in 1975 and 1979, also occupies the ‘Numero Uno’ spot on this list. Under him, the West Indies tasted Test victories in all corners of the world and he eventually went on to lead him to 23 away Test wins.
