There have been many wicketkeeper-batters to have made a tremendous impact on the 22 yards apart from their outstanding glovework. Barring Adam Gilchrist, most of the stumpers have batted in the middle order which gives too less time to settle down and keep the scoreboard ticking.
There have been many keeper-batters who have scored half-centuries on a consistent basis in One Day Internationals. Without further ado, here’s a look at the most score of 50+ for designated stumpers in the 50-overs format.
3. Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist needs no introduction. He was a very accomplished ODI batter and was an impactful player for Australia in his illustrious career. Gilchrist was a big-match player and scored two half-centuries and a century in Australia’s three World Cup triumphs in 1999, 2003 and 2007. In the 69 matches from 1998 to 2008, Adam Gilchrist 53 half-centuries averaging 88.53 and a strike rate of 110.43.
2. MS Dhoni
The legendary Indian skipper MS Dhoni was known for his unbelievable glovework taking acrobatic catches and effecting lightning-fast stumpings. However, he was also an excellent batter and was a world-class finisher in his prime.
It is to be noted that Dhoni to date holds the record of the highest individual score by a wicketkeeper-batter in ODIs (183) and has also scored in excess of 10000 runs in the format. In the 83 innings between 2005 to 2019, he registered 73 half-centuries. He had an average of 134.23 and a strike rate of 97.39.
- Kumar Sangakkara
Iconic Sri Lankan stumper Kumar Sangakkara occupies the top spot in this category. He is one of the best wicketkeeper-batters to have played the game and has gone on to shatter a few records across formats. In the 114 matches from 2000 to 2015, he went on to register 91 half-centuries. He averaged 91.03 and had a strike rate of 88.21. He also holds a unique record of registering four consecutive centuries in a single edition of the ODI World Cup.
