3. Gautam Gambhir
The elegant left-handed opener proved to be a match-winner for India across formats from 2008-2011. Gambhir was unstoppable during this phase as he scored runs across formats and won the matches for his country. The southpaw breached the mark of fifty runs on 56 occasions in his career. The ICC Test batter’s rankings in 2009-10 even ranked the Delhi batter at the top.
2. Sunil Gavaskar
People consider the legendary Sunil Gavaskar as one of the greatest openers to have ever played Test cricket.. Gavaskar was the first batter to breach the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket. Apart from being a legendary opener in Tests, Gavaskar also played 108 ODIs and scored 77 fifty plus scores for the country.
1. Rohit Sharma
The current Indian captain is one of the best openers in world cricket at the moment across formats. Rohit Sharma began opening the innings in 2013 and has never looked back since. He is arguably the best white ball opener in the world currently. The 35-year-old has several records to his name opening the innings like most double hundreds in ODIs and most hundreds in T20Is.
The Mumbai batter has begun opening in Test Cricket as well since 2019 and has revived his Test career. Rohit has most number of fifty-plus scores by an Indian opener i.e. 78. With a few more years of cricket left in him, he is likely to add a few more fifty to his tally.
