Most 10-wicket hauls in Borger-Gavaskar Trophy history
To take ten or more out of the 20 wickets of the opposition in a game count as a great achievement of a bowler. The Border-Gavaskar trophy (BGT) is a Test series played between two of the fiercest rivals India and Australia. The series is named after two of the former legendary skippers Sunil Gavaskar from India and Allan Broder from Australia. Over the years in BGT, a total of seven players have managed to snare ten or more scalps in a match.
Let us look at the most ten-wicket hauls in the history of BGT:
3. Glenn McGrath, Jason Krejza, R Ashwin, Nathan Lyon, Steve O’Keefe (1)
Four Australians namely Glenn McGrath, Jason Krejza, Nathan Lyon, and Steve O’Keefe, and India’s R Ashwin have picked a solitary ten-for. Pacer McGrath achieved figures of 10/103 in the Sydney Test in 2000. He picked up 5/48 and 5/55 in the first and second innings respectively as the Aussies won by an innings and 141 runs.
Krejza grabbed 12/358 in the Nagpur Test in 2008 as he took 8/215 and 4/143 in the first and second innings respectively but India won the contest. Meanwhile, Ashwin returned with figures of 12/198 in Chennai in 2013 as India won by eight wickets. He took 7/103 in the first and 5/95 in the second innings.
Lyon spun his web when he snared 12 scalps for 286 runs in Adelaide in 2014, when Aussies won by 48 runs as the spinner took figures of 5/134 and 7/152 in the match. Further, Steve O’Keefe delivered match totals of 12/70 in Pune in 2017 when the Kangaroos won by a mammoth margin of 333 runs as he grabbed identical figures of 6/35 in both the innings.
2. Anil Kumble (2)
Former spinner Anil Kumble finds himself in the second position on this list. The leg-spinner took two ten-wicket hauls in the series. Firstly, Kumble picked up 12/279 in the Sydney Test in 2004 in a drawn affair. While he had figures of 8/141 in the first innings, he took 4/138 in the second.
The second instance came when he took 13/181 in Chennai later that year. Incidentally, this clash also finished in a draw, with Kumble spinning his web with figures of 7/48 in the first and 6/133 in the second innings.
1. Harbhajan Singh (3)
The Turbantor Harbhajan Singh tops the list for picking up ten wickets thrice in the BGT history. He first took 13/196 in the Kolkata Test in 2001, which also included a famous hat trick. He returned with 7/123 in the first and 6/73 in the second innings as India scripted a memorable victory by 171 runs.
In the final Test of the same series, the right-arm spinner picked up 15/217 in Chennai, where India sealed the contest by a two-wicket margin. He took 7/133 and 8/84 in the match as India also created history by winning the series 2-1 (3).
His third and last instance came in Bangalore in 2004 when he snared 11 scalps for 224 runs. Harbhajan took 5/146 and 6/78 in the game, however, the Aussies won by 217 runs.
