Mitchell Marsh ruled out IPL 2020, Holder comes in as replacement

Marsh

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will miss the entire 2020 IPL after injuring himself in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s opening match against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the franchise confirmed on Wednesday.

The Australian was bowling the fifth over of the first innings when he twisted his ankle after delivering the ball. Marsh was immediately seen limping and was taken off the field, with Vijay Shankar completing the remaining two balls of his over.

RCB put up a challenging 163/5 in 20 overs thanks to half-centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and AB de Villiers. The Sunrisers found themselves in a precarious position despite Jonny Bairstow’s blazing fifty. Once the England batsman was dismissed, RCB picked up eight wickets and gave away just 30-odd runs. Seeing his team in a tough situation, a struggling Marsh walked out to bat but bagged a first-ball duck.

Who will be Marsh’s replacement?

However, Marsh’ injury seems to have worsened, with Sunrisers captain David Warner confirming it ‘does not look good’.

“It seems a serious injury. I am not sure if he be able to compete in any of the matches,” a team source told PTI.

“Marsh had twisted his angle while trying to stop a drive from Aaron Finch. With his team in dire straits during the chase, Marsh showed enormous courage as he came to bat at No. 10 but failed to bail his team out of trouble. Marsh’s international career has been marred with injuries as well.”

Marsh’s exit brings in West Indies Test captain Jason Holder as a replacement in the Sunrisers camp. Holder’s addition provides a vital boost to the Hyderabad franchise, who struggled to keep the momentum going in their match against RCB.
