Mike Hesson expects Maxwell’s return to cricket before IPL
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell endured a tough time during the recently concluded T20 World Cup in Australia as his side bowed out from the competition at the Super 12 stage. But the mercurial Aussies’ misery were compounded after he suffered a broken fibula in a freak accident during a birthday bash in Melbourne. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson gave an update on Maxwell’s injury in the latest video.
Glenn Maxwell underwent surgery on Sunday and has been ruled out of Australia’s upcoming ODI series against World Champions England, commencing later this week. The mercurial cricketer is also slated to miss the Big Bash campaign for Melbourne Stars earlier next year, however, he is likely to return to fitness before RCB’s IPL campaign next year.
“There is a little concern with Glenn Maxwell, heading to the retention phase with a broken leg. We wish him a speedy recovery. We have information that he will be back well before the IPL (next year),” said Hesson in a video posted by RCB on Wednesday.

Despite his injury, RCB decided to retain the flamboyant cricketer along with skipper Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, and Wanindu Hasaranga, ahead of the mini-auction in December. Mike Hesson, RCB’s director of Cricket operations gave an insight into Maxwell’s injury, reckoning he will be back well before IPL 2023.
Earlier, Australia’s Chief Selector George Bailey said that Maxwell was in good spirits following his surgery on Sunday and will reveal the timeline for Maxwell’s recovery in the upcoming days.
“Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident, and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances, given he was in great touch in his last few games. Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure, and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation,” said Bailey in a statement as quoted by cricket.com.au.
