Manpreet Gony retires from Indian cricket, joins Global T20 Canada

Manpreet Gony, the right-arm medium pacer from Punjab announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Monday. Gony, who has represented Punjab in domestic cricket and the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, will continue to play overseas short-format T20 leagues. Following in the footsteps of teammate Yuvraj Singh, the 35-year old has signed up for the Toronto Nationals in the Global T20 Canada League.

Gony made his debut for Punjab in the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy. In his first-class career spanning 61 matches, he picked up 196 wickets at an average of 28.77. In 2008, he went on to play in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings. Gony finished as one of the leading wicket-takers for CSK with 17 wickets.

After a fruitful debut IPL season, Gony consequently earned a national call-up in the Tri-series in Bangladesh, but that didn’t last beyond a couple of one-day internationals. He played for CSK for two more seasons, before the Deccan Chargers bought him in 2011. Gony plied his trade for the Kings XI Punjab for 4 seasons and was then bought by the Mumbai Indians in 2018.
