Lowest team scores in T20I powerplay
Batters look to get their team off to a flier in the first six overs. They look to provide a positive quickfire start to their side in these particular overs, making use of the field restrictions. A match can be won or lost depending upon the performances of teams in the powerplay. And in this, many times teams also suffer and end up scoring fewer runs and losing wickets.
Let’s take a look at the lowest scores by teams in the powerplay in T20 internationals: (Excluding rain-curtained matches)
3) 14/2 by West Indies
West Indies holds the record for posting the third-lowest score of 14/2 in the powerplay in T20Is. The instance occurred against Sri Lanka in the final of the T20 World Cup in Colombo (RPS) in 2012. Batting first in the summit clash, the Caribbean side lost both the openers Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles inside the powerplay for three and zero respectively. But the Men in Maroon wouldn’t mind that at the end as they defeated Sri Lanka at their own den by 36 runs and went on to lift their maiden T20 WC trophy under the leadership of Darren Sammy.
2) 13/3 by West Indies
West Indies feature again in this unwanted list as they managed to score only 13/3 this time around against Pakistan in Kingtown in St Vincent in 2013. Having lost the first of the two-match T20I series, the hosts bowled first and restricted the Asian side to just 135/7 in 20 overs. Chasing just 136, the home team crumbled and found themselves at 13/3 in the powerplay. They lost their top three batters Charles, Gayle, and Marlon Samuels cheaply and eventually went on to lose the match by 11 runs and the series 2-0.
1) 13/4 by Pakistan
This time Pakistan suffered the low against West Indies as they registered the lowest powerplay score of 13/4 in the T20 World Cup 2014 in Mirpur. West Indies batted first and posted 166/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Chasing 167, Pakistan lost their way right from the start and managed to score only 13 by losing four wickets in the powerplay. They lost big guns Ahmed Shehzad, Akmal brothers Kamran and Umar, and Shoaib Malik and got bundled out for just 82 in 17.5 overs. Samuel Badree took three of those wickets to punctured Pakistan’s innings at the beginning.
