Lightning bolts – 5 fastest deliveries in the history of IPL

Dale Steyn

The Indian Premier League has established its name as the best in the business. The multi-team event provides a world-class platform to play cricket in a franchise-based form. Over the years, the IPL has flaunted a deadly collection of pace bowlers and some of them have been quick enough to blow everyone’s mind. Let’s take a look at the fastest deliveries ever bowled in the history of IPL-

5. Dale Steyn – 152.44 kmph – 2014

A bowler of Steyn’s stature is expected to feature in such a list multiple times. Even towards the end of his career, there was barely anyone who could defeat Steyn’s pace and accuracy. An example of that was his delivery bowled at a 152.44 kmph in the 2014 edition while he was representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The said delivery was the fastest of the season and the stands as the fifth fastest today.

4. Shaun Tait – 153.43 kmph – 2013

Another gun-pacer from Australia, Shaun Tait has been renowned for his speed with the ball in his hands. Despite his career being injury-ridden, Tait never compromised with his pace and power behind the ball. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2013 season, he delivered a ball measuring 153.43 kmph which was the quickest delivery of the season and is the fourth fastest in the history of the tournament to this day.

3. Pat Cummins – 153.56 kmph – 2017

The Australian pacer has not been a very regular feature in the IPL, however, he has ensured to make the lives of batsmen difficult every time he has stepped out. In the 2017 edition, while representing the Delhi Capitals, Cummins clocked one at 153.56 kmph which was the fastest delivery of the season and third quickest overall.

2. Kagiso Rabada – 154.23 kmph – 2019

Another dangerously quick pacer from the same land as Steyn is Kagiso Rabada, who has been a promising player for the Delhi Capitals. The fierce pacer features many times in the list of the fastest deliveries and his delivery bowled at 154.23 kmph in the 2019 edition while playing for Delhi Capitals is only second to Steyn’s 154.40 in the history of the IPL.

1. Dale Steyn – 154.40 kmph – 2012

Correctly referred to as the “Steyn-gun”, he has dominated the cricketing world with the ball for over a decade. The South-African pacer has represented the Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. While playing for Deccan Chargers in 2012, he clocked at 154.40 kmph that remains the fastest ball ever bowled in the history of the league.
