Kyle Jamieson – New Zealand’s tall pacer is reaching new heights in Tests
How many players can claim to have a better record in international cricket than domestic cricket? There have been many domestic stalwarts who have failed to step up the challenges that international cricket offers at the highest level. However, for New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson, it has not only been a smooth transition but a successful one.
Impressive start against India
Earlier this year, the 6 feet 8 inches tall fast bowler – the tallest ever to play for New Zealand in international cricket – made his Test debut against India. In his first bowling attempt, he returned with the prized scalps of Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and two other Indian batsmen. Jamieson followed his 4/39 in the first Test with 5/45 in the second. Along with his bowling heroics, he also played crucial knocks of 44 and 49 with the bat.
Taking down West Indies and Pakistan
Continuing his form with the bat, Jamieson struck his first Test half-century against West Indies while taking four wickets in his third Test. His spell of 5/34 in the next Test blew away the Caribbean side as the Blackcaps surged to an innings victory.
In the Boxing Day Test of 2020, Jamieson began the series against Pakistan with four wickets. It was in the second Test that he breathed fire. His spells of 5/69 and 6/48 saw Pakistan crashing down to an innings victory. The performance was so impressive that he won the Man of the Match award ahead of Kane Williamson who struck 238 runs in the Test.
Breathtaking start
After only six Test matches, Jamieson has claimed 36 wickets with a bowling average of 13.27. His average is the third-best among all bowlers (minimum 12 innings) in Test history. Only George Lohmann and John Ferris stand ahead of him, both played in the late 1800s. His batting average, albeit with two not outs in six innings, is currently 56.50. If he manages to continue in the same vein, many more records are coming Jamieson’s way.
