The Rise

Nathan Lyon moved Canberra as a teenager to play for under-17s and under-18s representative teams. Later in 2010, Nathan Lyon moved to Adelaide and worked as a member of the ground staff team at the Adelaide Oval. His performances in local T20 cricket saw him being picked in the Big Bash League.

In 2010–11 BBL, Lyon was the leading wicket-taker for the Redbacks who won the competition. In the same year, the off-spinner was selected to represent Australia A in Zimbabwe where he took 11 wickets in the tri-series to be named man of the series. He made his Test debut in 2011 and took a wicket on his first ball in Test cricket.

Career Highlights

Off The Field

Lyon is involved with many charities. He is an ambassador for a New South Wales state government’s campaign against drunk driving. The off-spinner is also Cricket Australia’s National Inclusion Ambassador. He is adored on social media where is frequently referred to as GOAT (Greatest of all time). Nice Garry is a catch-phrase stuck with him. This was after wicketkeeper Matthew Wade kept shouting it after Lyon’s every delivery in a Test match.
