The beginning
If the 13-year-old Warner had taken the advice of his childhood coach, cricket fans would be witnessing a right-handed version of this explosive batsman today. But thanks to his mother’s insistence, Warner continued to bat left-handed and went on a record-breaking spree in the Under-16s. In 2011, when he finally got his ‘baggy green’, he was quick enough to announce his arrival. In only his 2nd Test outing, Warner achieved the distinction that others could only dream of – carrying the bat through a Test innings. It was only the beginning of a phenomenal international career for Australia.
The rise
The comeback
However, Warner’s elevation to the top went hand-in-hand with his fair share of controversies. From punching Joe Root at a bar to Twitter spats with journalists and finally the ‘sandpaper’ scandal – there have been enough cracks in his career. But what destroyed Warner in the public eye was the infamous 2018 Cape Town incident, where he was found guilty of tampering the ball with teammates Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith. Having spent 13 months away from international cricket, a changed Warner bounced back to impress in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. It was also the year he won his third Allan Border Medal.
Off the field
Apart from being at his destructive best on the field, Warner is a sensation of the field as well. Along with his wife Candice and his three daughters, he’s known to be notorious on social media. The cricketer was recently pushed to join the video-sharing social network TikTok by his children.
