Jofra Archer to travel with England squad for World Cup 2023
England fast bowler Jofra Archer is still recovering from his elbow injury as fans are eagerly waiting for his comeback to the England team. The right-arm seamer missed out on the team’s 2023 World Cup squad as he’s still undergoing rehabilitation. However, in a major update, Archer will travel with the World Cup squad in India as a reserve where he will continue his rehab. England National Selector Luke Wright confirmed the same on Monday, September 18.
Notably, Archer played a crucial role in England’s first-ever ODI World Cup triumph in 2019. He bowled the pivotal super over of the final and defended 15 runs for his side. The 28-year-old finished as the joint third-highest wicket-taker of the tournament. The pacer picked up 20 wickets from 11 matches at an average of 23.05 and an economy of 4.57.
“Jofra Archer will be travelling with the squad to India. He is one of the reserves but we also need to look after him, focus on his rehab,” Wright was quoted as saying by SkySports.
Archer has missed out on several important series and tournaments for England due to recurrent injuries. Ashes 2021-22 and 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022 are the tournaments he missed. He last played a professional game during Match 49 of IPL 2023 between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. His comeback to IPL was marred by injuries. Jofra could only play five matches in the entire season and picked just two wickets.
Harry Brook enters England’s World Cup squad
Meanwhile, youngster Harry Brook has been named in England’s final World Cup squad after missing out from the provisional squad. Brook replaced Jason Roy in the team who missed the four-match ODI series vs New Zealand due to back spasms.
Notably, Brook had a below-par show in the ODI series against New Zealand registering scores of 25, 2 and 10. However, due to his ability to turn matches with his breathtaking strokeplay, he was drafted into the squad.
