It’s not impossible to beat Australia at the Gabba: Jos Buttler

England and Australia are all set to lock horns with each other for the first Test on Wednesday, December 8 at Brisbane. Ahead of the match, England’s keeper-batter Jos Buttler stated that there is no reason why the visitors cannot dominate the proceedings at Gabba. He recounted the instance when a depleted Indian team emerged triumphant against the hosts at the same venue.

Australia has a dominating record at the Gabba. However, India exuded great character to secure a win at the very same venue and also clinched the series earlier this year. Buttler said that the opposition is strong but if England bring their ‘A-game to the fore they can take command of the match.

“Any time you come and play in Australia as an England team it’s a huge challenge, history tells you that. That makes it exciting. Australia tends to play well here (Brisbane) but they obviously lost to India recently at this venue, which proves it’s not impossible to beat them here. We know to be able to do that we have to perform close to our best as a side. We focus a lot on ourselves – the opposition are a fantastic team – but we know if we bring our A-game we will be there or thereabouts,” Buttler told the media ahead of the match.

Jimmy’s not going to play but he is fit: Jos Buttler

The keeper-batter also opened up on Anderson missing out on the first Test match. He asserted that the pacer isn’t injured and is rested for the first match taking into consideration his workload management.

“Jimmy’s not going to play but he is fit. It’s obviously a very long series and we want a guy like that to be available to play as much of a part as possible. It’s just precautionary. He bowled well yesterday and again today. He’s fit but the guys are just being cautious,” Buttler added.

All-rounder Ben Stokes is all set to take the charge of the field for the first Test. Previously he had taken an indefinite break from the game to focus on his mental health and was also recovering from a finger injury. Buttler said that with the basket of skills he brings to the fore, it is great to have Stokes back in the setup.

“He looks fit, strong, he’s hitting the ball well, he’s bowling well. A massive plus for us obviously as a side with Ben being available to play. He brings so much to the team with his skillset on the field, and it’s great to have him back in the ranks, it’s a big lift for everyone in the dressing room,” Buttler said.
