Devon Conway played a key role in helping New Zealand score a series-levelling victory over Bangladesh in the 2nd Test. The left-hander scored a classy 109 for the Kiwis and helped his side thrash the opposition by an innings and 117 runs. Also in the first Test, Conway scored a superb 122.
New Zealand might have found a long-term prospect for their side at the top of the order. Conway has been extremely impressive in his short Test career so far. The 30-year-old has scored 623 runs in just nine innings in the whites and has scored his runs at a stellar average of close to 70.
In fact, Conway experienced a fairytale start to his Test career after he scored a brilliant 200 on debut against England, and etched his name in the Lord’s honours boards. Even in the limited-overs formats of the game, the left-hander has been spectacular.
Conway has played just three ODI matches but has already plundered 225 runs at an average of 75. He has also scored his runs at a good pace, as his strike rate of 88.24 indicates. And, in those three matches, the left-hander has scored a century and a half-century.
And then, comes the T20I format of the game, and even there Conway has excelled. In 20 matches, Conway has amassed over 600 runs and has scored them at an average of 50.17. He has also taken the attack to the opposition at the top of the order in the T20I format of the game, as his strike rate of 139.35 suggests.
And, in his T20I career that has lasted 17 innings, Conway has scored four half-centuries. Looking at the impressive numbers that he has racked up, it looks as if New Zealand have found a long-term prospect at the top of the order across each and every format of the game.
Conway is a batter who can mould his game to the demands of the different formats that he plays. In Test cricket, he bides his time and takes the shine off the new ball. In T20I cricket, Conway can throw caution to the winds and go for the kill. And, it is this versatility that makes Conway an asset to the Kiwis, and he is surely a batter who will turn out to be a game-changer for the Kiwis in the coming years.
