IPL: Three players who failed to justify their high price

Indian Premier League (IPL) is a tournament of uncertainty. In past years, the tournament has seen several youngsters or less renowned players being purchased at a low price and surprising everyone with their phenomenal performances. There are several big names who were purchased by the franchises for a heavy amount but failed to live up to their expectations. Here’s a list of players who have disappointed their fans and franchise despite going for big money.

1. Glenn Maxwell (Kings XI Punjab)

Australia limited-over specialist Glenn Maxwell was purchased by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping price of Rs 10.75 crore ahead of the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the hard-hitting batter failed to stamp his authority in that tournament and was heavily criticized by the experts for almost throwing his wicket away in every match.

The big show managed to score only 108 runs in 13 games with an average of 15.42. Often known for his smashing performances, Maxwell batted with a strike rate of 101.88. It would be safe to say that Maxwell was not in his form during that tournament.

2. Pat Cummins (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Purchased at a whopping cost of Rs 15.5 crore from his base price of Rs 2 crore ahead of the IPL 2020, pacer Pat Cummins was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for providing them early breakthroughs during the field restrictions.

However, the express pacer couldn’t live up to his expectations as he only managed to take 12 wickets from his 14 games in the season. Cummins had an average of 34.08, while he almost gave eight runs per over. Proving his batting abilities, Cummins managed to score 146 runs scoring a half-century as well but he couldn’t perform in his major role with the ball.

3. Yuvraj Singh (Delhi Capitals)

Winning a bidding war against his former franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals managed to bag Indian stalwart Yuvraj Singh at a massive price of Rs 16 crore in the 2015 IPL auctions.

DC had very high expectations from the left-arm batter, but Yuvraj didn’t do justice to his price. The man of the tournament in the 2011 World Cup only managed to score 248 runs at a strike rate of 118.09. The left-arm spinner couldn’t weave his magic with the ball as well, as he managed to take only one wicket in nine overs he bowled in the tournament.
