IPL Retentions: Purse left for each team
While the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) concluded just over a month ago, preparations for the next season are underway. On Tuesday (November 30), all the eight existing IPL sides announced their retention list. With a mega auction taking place ahead of the 2022 season, each franchise was allowed to retain just a maximum of four players out of which only two can be overseas cricketers.
While several franchises used all of their retention cards, some opted to save money for the bidding event. For the unversed, salaries of retained players are determined by the number of retentions made by the franchise. Teams making four retentions, shredded INR 42 crore from their salary purse of INR 90 crore with the first, second, third, and fourth-retained player receiving INR 16, 12, 8, and 6 crores respectively.
Teams, opting to hold onto three players, spent INR 33 crore with the first, second, and third-retained player receiving 15, 11, and 7 crores respectively. In the case of two capped retentions, the first and second retained player would have received INR 14 and 10 crore respectively. Uncapped players have received INR 4 crore as their retention salary.
Although none of the sides retained just a single player, INR 14 crore would have been given to the privileged cricketer in that case. With the retention list out, teams are left with different purse amounts. Hence, they have to make their auction strategies accordingly. A few players also took pay cuts despite they were getting more money according to their retention slab amount.
Meanwhile, let’s look at the players retained by all teams:
