IPL: Only teams to score four 200+ totals at a venue in a single season
Playing on home ground is always preferable for any team. The crowd support and home conditions are the major factors in teams making that particular venue a fortress. Scoring 200 runs in a Twenty20 game is a tough ask; doing it in consecutive matches is even more difficult. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), a few high-profile teams have managed to go past the 200-run mark at a venue in a season and they feature in this article.
Let’s take a look at the sides to score 4 200-plus scores at a venue in a single IPL season:
1. Royal Challengers Bangalore (2016)
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise is quite famous for its loyal fanbase at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Irrespective of wins or defeats, the fans chant ‘RCB RCB RCB’ in every single game of each season. They are one of the two teams to post 200 on the board four times in a single edition. In 2016, they scored 227/4 in their first home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). They went on to win the match by a margin of 45 runs. Against Gujarat Lions (GL), they reached a massive total of 248/3 eventually winning the game by 144 runs. In the next match, the Royal Challengers managed to reach 211/3 eventually sealing the deal by 82 runs (DL Method). This came as heartbreak as chasing a target of 209 in the final, RCB ended up with 200 as they lost the summit clash by just eight runs.
2. Mumbai Indians (2023)
Mumbai Indians are the second team to grab the feat. They did the job in the ongoing sixteenth edition of the IPL at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In Match No. 31, they failed to reach the target of 215 set by Punjab Kings (PBKS). The home ended up with 201 on the board to lose the game by 13 runs. In the next match, MI scripted history by chasing down a mammoth target of 213 against Rajasthan Royals (RR). They became the first side to chase a total of above 200 at the venue in the IPL. RCB set a target of exactly 200 for MI which they achieved with ease with 21 balls to spare. The five-time title winners ended up with 200/4 in 16.3 overs. In the next encounter, MI posted 218/5 on the board against Gujarat Titans (GT) eventually sealing the contest by 27 runs. Notably, all four 200-plus scores were achieved by MI in successive games.
