IPL: Highest totals by CSK
Four-time champions Chennai Super Kings had a nightmare of a season in IPL 2022 as they were unable to put forth a winning squad at the mega-auction. But they made amends ahead of the IPL 2023 at the mini-auction and managed to build upon a strong squad. Though they started the season with a loss, they managed to grab three victories from their first five games to mark a remarkable comeback.
With an aim to forget the previous edition of the tournament, CSK have gotten their IPL 2023 campaign going on a positive note and have been going strong thus far. Their fifth game of the tournament against the Royal Challengers Bangalore attracted viewers in huge numbers as the game witnessed a record-shattering 2.3 crore viewership. CSK’s total in the contest was also one of their highest in the tournament’s history.
On that note, let us look at CSK’s three highest totals in IPL history:
226/6 vs RCB at Bengaluru in 2023
In the ongoing 2023 edition of the tournament, RCB hosted CSK at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It never looked like RCB’s home game as the CSK supporters had come out in enormous numbers, as compared to the RCB fans. Batting first, CSK posted a thumping 226/6 courtesy of top knocks by Devon Conway and Shivam Dube. It was an intense game as RCB came very close to chasing it, but eventually lost by eight wickets.
240/5 vs PBKS at Mohali in 2008
The inaugural edition of the IPL witnessed some rollicking performances by several batters. The adrenaline rush would surely have been high given that a one-of-a-kind tournament had been introduced. In just the second game of the first-ever IPL in 2008, CSK notched up 240 runs against the Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings- PBKS), thanks to a magnificent unbeaten century by Michael Hussey. The bowlers managed to defend the score as CSK won by 33 runs.
246/5 vs RR at Chennai in 2010
In the 32nd match of the IPL 2010, Chennai Super Kings hosted the Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Winning the toss, skipper MS Dhoni elected to bat first. CSK’s decision worked in their favor as a century by opening batter Murali Vijay, followed by Albie Morkel’s 34-ball 62 helped CSK post a humungous total of 246/5 in their stipulated 20 overs, which remains to be the third-highest total in the history of IPL as well. CSK eventually won the game by 23 runs.
