IPL franchises to submit retained players list by 15th Nov
While the T20 World Cup in Australia is officially underway, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has started preparations for next year’s edition. All the IPL franchises have been asked to submit their list of the retained players by 15th November, with the mini-auction reportedly set to be held on December 16.
While the 2022 IPL saw two new teams grab all the headlines following a mega auction, this year’s auction will be more concise in comparison. All the participating teams have been handed a purse of INR 5 crore, with last year’s remaining sum of each team adding up to the initial sum. The overall combined purse value is expected to be around INR 95 crore.
The smaller purse will mean a more intense bidding war for players as each team will strategize their buys more diligently in hopes of bolstering their squad. The mini-auctions have seen several high-profile acquisitions in the past, with Chris Morris’s whopping INR 16.25 crore purchase, the most expensive ever in IPL history, by Rajashtan Royals in 2021 being the most recent one.
Beyond the Protean, a few other notable foreign cricketers who earned big bucks at the mini-auctions are Pat Cummins (15.5 crores) by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020 and Ben Stokes (14.50 crore) by Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017. With Stokes, Sam Curran, Tim David, and several other big names available for the picking, the forthcoming auction is set to be another frantic affair.
Franchises will have to decide on the future of the replacements brought in for IPL 2022
The teams will be hoping to utilize their money wisely, and here is the complete list of teams, and their remaining purse value after last year’s auction:
Punjab Kings (INR 3.45 crore), Lucknow Super Giants (exhausted), Chennai Super Kings (INR 2.95 crore), Royal Challengers Bangalore (INR 1.55 crore), Rajasthan Royals (INR 0.95 crore), Kolkata Knight Riders (INR 0.45 crore, Defending champions Gujarat Titans (INR 0.15 crore) while three teams – Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals (INR 0.10 crore).
Apart from signing new players, the teams will also have to decide on the injury replacements, which they brought in during the last edition. The franchise could retain either one of the replacements or the original signing or could retain both if their squad limit allows.
