IPL Auction Review: Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians went all in for Cameron Green at the auction, as they roped him for INR 17.50 crore. Making his IPL debut, Green became the second-most expensive player in the history of IPL. Mumbai Indians caught the big fish by spending almost 85% of their purse amount.
Emptying pockets behind just one player seems foolish, but not if the player is of Green’s caliber. MI’s previous season was disastrous as they lost most of their fixtures and ended at the last spot in the points table. Last year, they spent INR 8 crore for Jofra Archer, who was not even going to participate in the tournament.
But strategic purchase is going to help them dominate this season. Mumbai Indians purchased eight players at the auction this year, of which Green turned out to be the costliest. He was followed by Jhye Richardson, though he was roped in at his base price of INR 1.5 crore. They then got Piyush Chawla, Duan Jansen, Vishnu Vinod, Shams Mulani, Nehal Wahdera, and Raghav Goyal at their base prices
Starting off on a high note, Mumbai Indians cashed out and purchased mostly the uncapped players. But nevertheless, they have managed to build a strong squad for the upcoming edition of the tournament. The five-time champions have been in a transition period over the past couple of seasons. But this time, they’ll be aim for the coveted IPL trophy.
With the IPL returning in the home and away format, Mumbai’s Australian power-hitters Green and Tim David will form a lethal combination at their home ground, Wankhede. The bowling attack is still a concern for Mumbai as Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer are still in their recovery and will be coming on the back of major injuries.
That’s where purchasing Jhye Richardson can prove to be the right move. The tall pacer can be roped into the team whenever their overseas pacers are unavailable. Overall, Mumbai Indians’ auction this year was a decent one as they have managed to build a squad that looks set for the future.
