IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians SWOT Analysis

Indian Premier League 2023 will kick off from March 31 with the players from ten teams showcasing their skills on the biggest T20 platform. Mumbai Indians, the most successful franchise with five titles, finished the 2022 edition in the last position with just four wins from 14 matches and are facing fresh issues ahead of the upcoming season.

They balanced the team with some big-name signings in a decent IPL 2023 mini-action. They spent INR 17.5 crore to sign Australian all-rounder Cameron Green and spend the remaining INR 3.05 crore to sign seven more players.

On that note, let’s analyse Mumbai Indians Squad:

Strengths

Jofra Archer will be available for the entire season after missing the last edition due to injury. With Jasprit Bumrah and Jhye Richardson out injured, the English pacer will be carrying the extra weight of leading a thin pace attack. Green might contribute as a sixth-choice bowler to share a workload.

Weaknesses

Mumbai Indians signed Jhye Richardson as a backup option to Bumrah and Archer but the Australian has joined the Indian star on sidelines. The lack of quality bowling options might hurt Mumbai a big time in IPL 2023. Jason Behrendorff and Duan Jansen provide a backup but are expected to warm the bench throughout the season as Archer, Green, Tim David, Dewald Brevis, and Tristan Stubbs might get preference for the four overseas slots.

Opportunities

Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis managed to fetch just nine combined appearances last season. But with Kieron Pollard and Daniel Sams out of the picture, South African youngsters will be getting more chances to show their potential this season. However, with Tim David and Cameron Green also competing, only one of Stubbs or Brewis might start. So, any coming chance will be a big opportunity for the duo.

Threats

Suryakumar Yadav was not even a regular starter for the team India prior to the IPL 2022 season but he now comfortably leads the ICC T20I Batter’s chart. He missed the first six games last season but still managed to score 303 runs at a strike rate of 145.67. Suryakumar possesses the ability to change the game single-handedly. However, he recently bagged three ducks in the recent ODI series against Australia at home and if he continues to misfire in the same fashion, the MI camp will surely be in for a bumpy ride.
