IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians – SWOT Analysis
The five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) spent big bucks to finalize their squad ahead of the 15th edition of the IPL. The Rohit Sharma led outfit spent massive amounts on players like Ishan Kishan and Jofra Archer and were left with a purse of INR 15 Lakh. In this article, let us do a SWOT Analysis of the Mumbai Indians’ side.
Strengths
The Mumbai Indians (MI) have terrific firepower in their pace bowling department. Jasprit Bumrah is arguably one of the best bowlers in the world at present, and he teaming up with Jofra Archer (from IPL 2023) is a terrific and mouth-watering prospect. Mumbai also have the wily Tymal Mills at their disposal, who can bamboozle the batters with his guile. And, that is 12 quality overs taken care of. Apart from that, MI also have the likes of Jaydev Unadkat, Meredith and Pollard to fall back on.
Weakness
The Mumbai Indians (MI) have let go of a number of match-winners like Quinton De Kock, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya. If Ishan Kishan moves to the top to open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma, then the middle order, apart from Pollard, looks a little fragile. Both the Pandyas, Hardik and Krunal are gone, and the five-time IPL champions might find the going difficult if a couple of early wickets fall.
Opportunities
MI went all out to procure Ishan Kishan and splashed a whopping sum of INR 15.25 Crores on him. The MI side can groom Kishan as their next potential leader, and he can learn the tricks of the trade from the legendary Rohit Sharma, who has led the MI side to five IPL titles. And Kishan is only 23 and is a captaincy material for the MI franchise.
Threats
The MI side do not have firepower in their batting department as compared to the previous seasons. Quinton De Kock was in scintillating form in the last 3 years, but MI let go of him. The same is the case with Hardik Pandya as well as Krunal Pandya. Yes, they have procured Tim David, who is a superb T20 freelancer, but the batting looks a little slim as compared to the previous years. And, if Rohit Sharma falls early, then the middle order might be under a lot of pressure.
