IPL 2022: LSG vs CSK Review – Lucknow complete a record chase

The Lucknow Super Giants got the better of Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the seventh match of IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on March 31.

Chasing a mammoth 211, skipper KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock meant business right away as they added 99 runs for the opening stand. Rahul scored a quickfire 26-ball 40 while de Kock played an explosive knock of 61 runs from 45 deliveries.

Even though Lucknow lost Manish Pandey cheaply, destructive West Indies T20I specialist Evin Lewis did not allow the CSK bowlers to breathe freely and went after them right from the word ‘go’. He increased the scoring rate easily in the middle and death overs with some amazing power-hitting techniques and brought the deficit down for the Lucknow Super Giants.

However, it was the penultimate over bowled by medium-pacer Shivam Dube where he unleashed his best as Lewis clobbered Dube for 25 runs including two sixes and as many fours to bring the equation down to nine runs off the final over. Youngster Ayush Badoni finished off things in style with a six and a single as LSG got home with three balls to spare.

Earlier after being asked to bat first, veteran batter Robin Uthappa scored 50 runs off 27 balls and there were also handy contributions from Moeen Ali (35), Shivam Dube (49), and, Ambati Rayudu (27) before MS Dhoni’s finishing touches propelled CSK to a mammoth 210/7 from their 20 overs. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 16 runs from six deliveries including two fours and a six at a strike rate of 266.7.

Top performer of the game

Evin Lewis

Evin Lewis could only manage 10 runs to his name in the last game against Gujarat Titans. But on this occasion, the southpaw single-handedly took care of the middle-order with a blistering unbeaten 55 runs off 23 balls that included six fours and three sixes at a strike rate of nearly 240 to be adjudged the Player of the Match for his game-changing innings.

Robin Uthappa

Uthappa who was one of CSK’s pioneers in the knockouts last season finally rediscovered his lost touch in the team’s second game. The opener’s vital 50 runs from 27 balls helped in laying a solid foundation for the defending champions as they lost Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply.

What’s next for the two sides?

CSK will face Punjab Kings in their next match on April 3 at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium while LSG lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 4.
