IPL 2022: Five players who are set for their IPL debut
The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is slated to start on March 26 (Saturday). The 2022 season will have ten teams fighting it out from the prized trophy. As the IPL slogan says ‘Where talent meets opportunity’ and this is the perfect platform where several young players get the chance to rub shoulders with the superstars of the game. On that note, let’s look at five players who will play the IPL for the first time.
N Tilak Varma (MI)
Five-time champions Mumbai Indians spent INR 1.7 crore to bag the services of N Tilak Varma. The left-handed batter was one of India’s key players at the under-19 World Cup that took place in South Africa earlier this year. Talking about his numbers, Varma has played 16 List-A games in which he has scored 784 and also managed to pick five wickets. The left-handed batter has scored three fifties and the same number of centuries at an average of 52.26.
Yash Dhull (DC)
India’s U-19 World Cup-winning captain Yash Dhull was bought at a cost of INR 50 lakh by Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2022 mega auction. Excited to be a part of the biggest cricketing league in the world, Dhull has also emphasized on the fact that he is very keen to go under training with Australian legend and franchise coach Ricky Ponting. The right-handed batter recently became the third batter in the history of Ranji Trophy to hit a century in each innings of his debut.
Dewald Brevis (MI)
South Africa U-19 batter Dewald Brevis is highly expected to make his debut in the upcoming 2022 Indian Premier League. The batter was purchased by Mumbai Indians at a cost of INR 3 crore in the IPL mega auction. The young cricketer is also nicknamed “Baby AB de Villiers”. The 18-year-old has played nine T20 matches in which he has scored a total of 207 runs with an average of 25.87.
Benny Howell (PBKS)
Experienced bowling allrounder Benny Howell was purchased by Punjab Kings at his base price of INR 40 lakh in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The 33-year-old has the experience of playing from several franchises all around the globe. Howell has an excellent bowling average of 19 in 144 T20 matches. Apart from his bowling skills, Howell is more than handy with his lower-order batting skills which might be useful for his franchise.
Dominic Drakes (GT)
Promising West Indies allrounder Dominic Drakes was an ideal pick for the new franchise Gujarat Titans. Especially with the uncertainty of their skipper Hardik Pandya allrounder ability, the allrounder was bagged by GT at a cost of INR 1.1 crore. He came to light after his heroics in last year’s Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final match when coming to bat in a pressure situation, Drakes managed to help his team earn the championship badge.
