IPL 2022 Auction – All you need to know about the retention rules

BCCI

All the eight existing Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises would be busy brainstorming with the deadline of submission of the retention list approaching. For the unversed, the eight sides, which participated in IPL 2021, have been asked to submit the list of their retained players by November 30. With a mega auction taking place ahead of the next season, several teams are set to undergo revamps.

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that each IPL franchise will be allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players in their squad ahead of the mega auctions. It must be noted that two new sides – which are based in Lucknow and Hyderabad respectively– will also participate in the next season. They’ll be allowed to pick three players from the non-retained players ahead of mega auctions.

Meanwhile, here’s all you need to know about the IPL 2022 retention policies:

Numbers of retained players

The eight existing teams are allowed to retain a maximum of four players from their IPL 2021 squad. Only a maximum of two overseas players can be picked. Also not more than three Indian players can be retained.

Cost of each retained player

The salary of retained players would be determined by the number of retentions made by the particular team. For e.g., if a franchise wants to retain a maximum of 4 players, then a total of INR 42 crore would be deducted from their purse. The first retained player will get INR 16 crore, the 2nd will be paid INR 12 crore, the 3rd will get a sum of INR 8 crore, and the 4th will be paid INR 6 crore.

In case, a franchise retains 3 players, then the purse will be INR 33 crore, with the first retained player getting INR 15 Crores, and the second and third retained players getting INR 11 and 7 crore respectively. If two players are retained, they will be paid INR 14 and 10 crore respectively. And finally, a player will bag INR 14 crore if he’s the only retained player from a franchise.

Players picked by the new franchises

After the list of retained players is out, the two new franchises will be allowed to pick three players from the list of non-retained players. This way, the eight existing sides and the two new teams will not have much unfair advantage heading to the auction event.
