IPL 2021: Steve Smith has a special message for Delhi Capitals fans
Steve Smith is considered as one of the greatest cricketers of the modern era and is renowned as the Fab 4 of cricket alongside Indian skipper Virat Kohli, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and England’s Joe Root. Thus, it was surprising for many fans to see Smith getting picked by franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) during the IPL auction for a mere price of INR 2.2 crores, hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the upcoming 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on February 18 in Chennai.
The 31-year-old last plied his trade for IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR) as their skipper in the 13th edition in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Smith had a poor run in IPL 2020 as he could pile up just 311 runs in 14 games at an average of 25.91 and strike rate of 131.22. This had resulted in RR releasing Smith ahead of IPL 2021 and naming Sanju Samson as their skipper.
On February 23, Tuesday, Delhi Capitals posted a video on their official Instagram handle where Smith expressed his excitement of representing DC in the T20 extravaganza and playing alongside a great set of players and coaches. In the short clip, the right-hander also hoped of taking the franchise to greater heights in the upcoming edition.

The chances of Smith getting a chance to play in all the games for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2021 are slim as the team led by Shreyas Iyer has their three overseas slots full in the form of all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and pacers Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje. In addition, there is a tough fight for the fourth overseas place in the Playing XI with contenders like Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Woakes, Tom Curran, and Sam Billings.
