IPL 2021: SRH vs DC Review – Spirited Delhi overcome Hyderabad in Super Over
The last match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai of the IPL 2021, ended in quite a dramatic fashion. The match went into the super over after a fantastic knock of Kane Williamson helped Hyderabad reach Delhi’s total, but not get past it. The match was quite eventful and even, but Delhi, in the end, were able to keep their nerves.
Rishabh Pant won the toss for Delhi and elected to bat first. In-form openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw gave them a good start with an opening partnership of 81 runs. Dhawan made 28 while Shaw scored a brilliant fifty, ending with 53 from 39 balls. There were contributions at the death from Rishabh Pant, who made 37 runs from 27 balls and Steve Smith who scored 34 runs off 25 balls. Delhi ended with what seemed like a good total of 159 for 4. Siddharth Kaul was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets to his name.
Sunrisers Hyderabad lost their captain David Warner quite early in the innings. Jonny Bairstow got them off to a flyer after this, scoring 38 runs from 18 balls. After he was dismissed, Sunrisers Hyderabad started to ease into the chase. Kane Williamson batting sensibly for his 66 runs from 51 balls, helped Sunrisers to end up with a tied result. There was a cameo from J Suchith where he scored 14 important runs from six balls.
For Delhi, Axar Patel announced his arrival to the 2021 IPL with two scalps. Avesh Khan was once again in the wickets, picking up three scalps while Amit Mishra got one wicket. All of the last over drama ensured a tie and the match rolled over to the super over. Sunrisers Hyderabad batted first, with Warner and Williamson coming out. They together scored seven runs as Axar Patel delivered a superb over.
The score might have been eight but unfortunately, Warner couldn’t get complete the run and was called out for being short. Rashid Khan tried his best to defend the total but Rishabh Pant’s cheeky reverse sweep four won it for the Delhi Capitals. With this, Delhi won their fourth match in the tournament.
Turning points:
Axar Patel’s double strike: In the last over of his spell, Axar Patel bowled a brilliant over in which he took the wickets of Rashid Khan and Abhishek Sharma. He gave only four runs in that over, which was the 17th over, He further went on to bowl the super over and keep Hyderabad down to just seven runs.
David Warner’s one-run short: The score of Hyderabad first reflected 8 for 0 but then was adjusted to 7 for 0. This was because Warner didn’t complete the run and didn’t get over the crease before running back. Delhi ended the chase on the last ball where they needed only one run.
Personal records/Achievements:
- Rishabh Pant became the highest run-getter for Delhi surpassing Shreyas Iyer.
- Jonny Bairstow became fourth quickest to 1000 IPL runs
Way ahead:
Delhi will now play Bangalore in Ahmedabad on April 27 while Hyderabad’s next match is against Chennai on April 28.
