The auction for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to take place on February 18 in Chennai. Ahead of the event, the Punjab franchise have decided to change their team name and the logo. The franchise will hope for their fortunes to change in the T20 extravaganza with this move. They unveiled the new name and the logo from their social media account.

Punjab Kings is one of the only three teams to not have won the IPL even once despite being part of the T20 tournament since its inception in 2008. Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Delhi Capitals are the other two teams to not lay their hands on the coveted trophy. The new logo depicts a shield inside which the team name has been written with the lion roaring.

The franchise will now be hoping to have a decent auction as they have the maximum purse of Rs 53.9 crore among eight teams.

Changing team name and logo to add a fresh look, says Punjab’s co-owner

Mohit Burman, one of the co-owners of the franchise, stated that they decided to change the team name and the logo to add a fresh look and feel to the team following the feedback from the fans apart from the in-house team. “We put it to research, both with fans and with closed groups and have finally arrived at the new name. The idea behind the new name is to add a fresh look and a fresh feel to the franchise.

“As with any product/service, everything has its own life cycle and we believe given the changing ethos and the audience taste we thought it was apt for the brand to go through a complete new refresh,” he said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo. As far as the auction is concerned, the Punjab franchise released players like Glenn Maxwell, Sheldon Cottrell, K Gowtham among others and they will be looking to strengthen their team again.
