IPL 2020: Rajasthan captain Steve Smith fined for slow over-rate against Mumbai
Rajasthan Royals captain Steve Smith has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in their match against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday. The Royals were on the receiving end of a 57-run drubbing at the hands of the defending champions in Abu Dhabi.
Mumbai won the toss and captain Rohit Sharma opted to bat first. However, the first innings took longer than the stipulated time to complete. As a result, Smith was fined INR 12 lakh of his match fees.
“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr. Smith was fined Rs 12 lakh,” an IPL media release stated.
This is the first over-rate offence for the Royals and the third of this year’s IPL. Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli was fined for a similar offence. Delhi Capitals followed suit, with skipper Shreyas Iyer also fined the same amount.
Rajasthan are currently placed seventh on the points table, having collected just four points in five matches. They take on the Delhi Capitals in their next match on Friday (October 9).
