IPL 2020: MI vs DC Review – Clinical Mumbai displace table-toppers comfortably
IPL 2020 has been different in more ways than one. 7 matches, 5 wins, 2 losses – this is not a common sight for a franchise like the Mumbai Indians, who’re known for their slow starts. In a high-profile clash between table-toppers Delhi and Mumbai on Sunday, it was Mumbai who emerged victorious with a clinical win.
After opting to bat first, Delhi lost Prithvi Shaw and Ajinkya Rahane early. But then Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan added 85 runs for the third wicket. However, the former’s wicket led to the run-rate coming down a bit. Despite Dhawan’s unbeaten 69, the Capitals could only post 162 runs on the board.
The chase didn’t start on a good note for MI as they lost their skipper Rohit Sharma early. Suryakumar Yadav and Quinton de Kock then slammed half-centuries to keep the team ahead in the chase. But Surya and Hardik Pandya got out off consecutive deliveries to give a glimmer of hope to the Capitals. Rather the game went to the last over as well only for Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya to finish it off without any more hiccups.
Turning Point
Marcus Stoinis’ run-out: Things could’ve been worse for MI with the ball if not for the mix-up between Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis. The platform was set for the Australian all-rounder to go berserk after coming in to bat in the 15th over and started well to muster 13 runs as well. But some swift fielding and calling problems between Stoinis and Dhawan led to the former losing his wicket. From hereon, DC could never up the ante as they would’ve liked to eventually finish 10-15 short, the point even Shreyas Iyer stressed in the post-match presentation.
