IPL 2019: Three talking points from MI’s crushing win over SRH
The night of 6th April 2019 belonged to the 22-year old fast bowler from Antigua – Alzarri Joseph. The pacer not only registered the best bowling figures on IPL debut but finished with the best figures in the tournament’s history. Joseph’s 6/12 broke the back of SRH’s batting and MI picked up a 40-run win. The wonderful spell helped Mumbai Indians defend 136 runs against red-hot Sunrisers Hyderabad side. Here are three talking points from the match.
Johnny Bairstow runs out Kishan, barely
Mumbai Indians dropped Yuvraj Singh for this match after his dismal returns. They brought back their young dasher, Ishan Kishan, and slotted him in the middle order. Kishan was off to a slow start and when he was on 17(21), the incident took place.
Kishan dabbed a ball towards cover and set off for the run. Pollard refused the run, and the youngster had to rush back to his end. Meanwhile, Bairstow had disturbed the stumps with his arm movement. The English wicketkeeper showed his cricketing sense and immediately uprooted the stump. Kishan was still out of his crease and was declared out.
Pollard’s redemption
Last few IPL matches were a tribute to the Caribbean flavor. After Andre Russell’s heroics, Kieron Pollard continued the tradition and smashed 46 from just 26 balls. after 18 overs, was languishing at 97/7. Pollard attacked Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Siddarth Kaul in the last two overs. The assault helped MI post 136/7 in 20 overs. Pollard’s knock included two fours and four humongous sixes.
Alzarri Joseph’s dream debut spell
Mumbai Indians lost their overseas pace bowler Adam Milne early in the season. As a replacement, they signed up West Indian pacer Alzarri Joseph. MI lost Lasith Malinga to the Sri Lankan domestic cricket and needed an overseas bowler to replace him in the playing XI. Joseph made his IPL debut against SRH and made a memorable one.
Bowling the fourth over of the chase, Joseph sent back Warner on the very first ball. He did not concede a run in that whole over. Joseph gulped the wicket of Vijay Shankar in his next over. His last two overs yielded eight runs but he picked up four wickets in the process. By dismissing Kaul for a duck, Joseph finished with the dream figures of 3.4-1-12-6, best ever in the IPL!
