Instances when India lost by a one wicket in ODIs
Closely-fought encounters are always thrillers and it keeps the fans on the edge of their seats. Losing by the barest margin always hurts any side irrespective of the format. The last pair is not expected to win matches as it is a rarity with the tenth and the eleventh players winning games for their respective teams. Team India has suffered such instances in one-day internationals and their narrowest losses in terms of wickets appear in this article.
Let’s take a look at the instances when India lost by a margin of one wicket in one-day internationals:
Pakistan (1986)
Javed Miandad broke India’s hearts when he smashed a last-ball six to snatch a thriller of the match by a one wicket. In Austral-Asia Cup final in Sharjah in 1986, India batted first and posted 245/7 on the board. Mohsin Khan and Abdul Qadir scored 36 and 34 respectively but it was Miandad who played a lone hand. With four needed off the final ball, he struck a six to clinch the title. He remained unbeaten on 116 off 114 with three fours and as many sixes.
Zimbabwe (2000)
Zimbabwe stunned India when they sealed a close encounter by a one-wicket margin in Jodhpur in 2000. In the third match of the series, India batted first and scored 283/8 in 50 overs. Chasing 284 for victory, Flower brothers, Andy and Grant, amassed 77 and 70 runs respectively. The match went right down to the wire with the Zimbabweans holding their nerve to win the clash with one ball to spare.
Zimbabwe (2002)
It was Zimbabwe again that shocked the Indians with a win by a one-wicket margin in the opening match of the series in Faridabad two years later. The home side batted first and posted 274/6 before the visitors found themselves at 253/9. Dougie Marillier then turned out to be the hero as he struck 56* off just 24 to seal the deal with two balls to spare.
West Indies (2013)
The West Indies also managed to script a one-wicket win against India in the second match of the Tri-Series held in 2013. Batting first, the Men in Blue posted 229/7 on the board with Rohit Sharma top-scoring with 60. In reply, Johnson Charles and Darren Bravo struck their respective fifties but bowler Kemar Roach held his nerve to score 14* off 32 to win the game for his side in 47.4 overs.
Pakistan (2014)
In the sixth match of the Asia Cup in Mirpur in 2014, India managed to score 245/8 in 50 overs. In reply, Mohammad Hafeez mustered 75 but it was Shahid Afridi who went berserk as he slammed 34* off just 18 with two fours and three sixes to seal a humdinger of a match for his team with two balls to spare.
Bangladesh (2022)
In the first of the three-match series which the Bangla Tigers won 2-1 in Bangladesh, the hosts defeated India by a one-wicket margin. The visitors batted first and got bundled out for 186 thanks to five-for from Shakib Al Hasan. In reply, Bangladesh found themselves in some trouble at 95/4 but Mehidy Hasan Miraz stole the show at the end as he amassed 38* off 39 and shared a 51-run partnership with Mustafizur Rahman for the tenth wicket to seal a one-wicket win in 46 ove
