Instances of India’s 10-wicket ODI losses
India’s latest 10-wicket defeat against Australia in the second ODI was their first defeat in 2023. They beat Australia in the first ODI after winning the three ODIs each against New Zealand and Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup year.
The Indian team was bowled out on just 117 runs while batting first in Visakhapatnam’s ODI. This was their lowest ODI total against Australia at home and fourth overall. Australia chased the target in just 11 overs without losing a wicket. This was only their second 10-wicket win over India.
However, the Men in Blue have suffered a 10-wicket defeat on four more occasions in their ODI cricket history. India’s first 10-wicket loss in ODIs came against New Zealand during the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup 1981/82 in Australia. India suffered seven defeats from ten matches throughout the series, including an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat against the Kiwis in Melbourne. Sunil Gavaskar-led Indian team managed to score just 112/9 while batting first. Then the Kiwi openers Bruce Edgar and John Wright recorded the fifties to hand India their first 10-wicket defeat in ODIs.
India’s next 10-wicket came during the tour of West Indies in 1997. In the fourth series decider game, India scored just 199/7 runs while batting first. Then the opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored an unbeaten century and Stuart Williams scored 78 runs to chase the target in 44.4 overs without losing a wicket.
South Africa handed India their third 10-wicket defeat in ODIs in 2000 in Coca-Cola Cup Tri-Series. India’s innings was collapsed to just 164 runs in Sharjah ODI and then the Proteas were eased to the target without losing a wicket with Herschelle Gibbs top-scoring with 87* off 93.
India’s next 10-wicket ODI defeat came against South Africa again and this time at home in 2005. Rahul Dravid-led team scored just 188 runs while batting first with Yuvraj Singh scoring a half-century. Then South African skipper Graeme Smith smashed 134* off 124 to hand India their first-ever 10-wicket ODI defeat at home.
Australia’s first 10-wicket ODI win against India came at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in January 2022. India scored a fighting total of 255 while batting first with Shikhar Dhawan scoring 74 off 91. But David Warner and Aaron Finch smashed unbeaten centuries to hand India an embarrassing 10-wicket defeat
