Injured Prithvi Shaw doubtful for India A’s tour of New Zealand
Prithvi Shaw could miss India A’s upcoming tour of New Zealand after the batsman picked up a shoulder injury during Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka in Mumbai. The BCCI immediately pulled Shaw out of the clash and sent him to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for further assessment.
The 20-year old injured his left shoulder on Friday in an attempt to stop an overthrow during the match at the Bandra Kurla Complex. Shaw did not return to take any further participation in the game. MRI scans conducted on Friday evening confirmed that the batsman had sustained a labral tear in his shoulder. While the extent of Shaw’s injury is still unknown, it puts a bigger question mark over his availability for India A in next month’s fixtures against New Zealand.
“He has been called to NCA. Mumbai Cricket Association got an email from the BCCI. He has left for Bengaluru,” said Ajinkya Naik, Mumbai’s team manager, as quoted by Sportstar.
“He couldn’t even lift his hand, has a tear in the shoulder. That much is known. He was not in a position to bat. How serious is the injury will be known at the NCA.”
Prithvi Shaw: A roaring debut
In October 2018, Shaw had announced his arrival with a smashing hundred on his Test debut against the West Indies. The performance earned him a call-up for the Australia tour as India’s first-choice opener. However, an ankle injury sustained during a warm-up game meant that Shaw had to return home midway through the series.
Then in July last year, the opener was handed an eight-month ban by the BCCI for a doping violation. Shaw had inadvertently consumed a prohibited substance via a cough syrup. He was subsequently dropped from India’s A squad for the West Indies tour.
After serving the backdated suspension, Shaw found himself back amongst the runs by the end of the year. Three fifties in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and a maiden first-class double in the Ranji Trophy were enough for him to be selected in the Indian squad across formats.
