Indian cricket is in good hands with Rohit Sharma as captain: Darren Sammy

Former West Indies skipper Darren Sammy feels Indian cricket is in good hands under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Giving further clarification on the same, the Windies icon equated Sharma’s leadership ability to that of the charismatic Mahendra Singh Dhoni with the technique of bringing the best out of their players.

Sharma, who missed the recently-concluded away bilateral series against South Africa due to an injury will be back in action during the upcoming limited-overs series against the West Indies starting February 6. He has been named the full-time white-ball skipper of the team after the selectors decided to sack Virat Kohli as ODI captain.

“Kohli has been exceptional with his performances on the field. I don’t think it will affect the team. Rohit has been an excellent captain (with Mumbai Indians), a good motivational leader. I’ve watched him captaining Mumbai in the IPL. He’s among the captains who have won like MS Dhoni, (Gautam) Gambhir…”, said Sammy according to Times of India.

At the same time, the two-time T20 World Cup-winning skipper also added that since the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma manage to get to lift the morale of their teammates, they go on to win major tournaments. The veteran all-rounder, who is currently leading the World Giants in the inaugural edition of the Legends League Cricket, is not at all worried about Indian cricket at the moment.

“All these guys can manage to get performances from their teammates. These captains normally get results and win trophies. I’m not worried about Indian cricket. It’s in good hand,” he said.

After a dismal performance in South Africa, especially after a whitewash in the ODI series, the Indian team would be hoping to make amends in the white-ball series against the Caribbeans at home that includes three One Day Internationals and as many T20Is.

Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium will be hosting the ODI series on February 6,9 and 11 while the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata will be hosting all three T20I games on February 16, 18 and, 20 respectively. Emerging leggie Ravi Bishnoi would be donning the Indian jersey for the very first time in this series while ex-skipper Virat Kohli would be hoping to end his two-year century drought in the home limited-overs series.
