IND vs ENG: England announce ODI squad; Jofra Archer and Joe Root miss out
England, on Sunday, announced their 14-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India. The ODI series will bring an end to England’s sojourn in India which started with the four-match Test series in February. India had come from behind to win the Test series 3-1. It was followed by the five-match T20I series which ended on Saturday (March 20).
Just like the Tests, England started the T20I series with a win but failed to win it. After losing two of the first three games, India won the last two games to clinch the series 3-2 in Ahmedabad. Both the teams will now fight it out in the ODIs. The series will be played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The first game of the series is scheduled to be played on Tuesday (March 23).
England’s ODI squad – Who are missing?
England will be without their pace spearhead Jofra Archer for the ODI series. They will also miss the services of their star batsman and Test captain Joe Root. Archer will miss the series after aggravating his elbow injury in the T20Is while Root will be unavailable since he flew back home after the Tests for rest. The ECB stated that ‘Archer is returning to the UK for further management and investigation of his right elbow injury’. The board also confirmed that the pacer will miss the start of this year’s IPL.
In another change, leg-spinner Matt Parkinson has earned a recall after a year. He has not played an ODI since playing the two games in his debut series against South Africa in February 2020. Liam Livingstone and Reece Topley have also been added to the ODI squad. They were a part of England’s T20I squad but did not play any game.
In addition to naming the 14 players in the main squad, England have also named three additional players – Jake Ball, Chris Jordan and Dawid Malan – as cover. The trio was with the England T20I squad for the recently-concluded series.
