India A team breezed to a comfortable 69-run victory over South Africa A at the Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday (29th August). Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball while Axar Patel and Shivam Dube adopted the attacking route to ensure a mammoth total in the first place. Indian captain Manish Pandey lost the toss in the first of the five-match series. Openers Rituraj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill started the proceedings for the home side. Barring Gaikwad, every specialist batsman began well but failed to convert the start into a big score. At 169/5 in 27 overs, India were not out of the woods.
Krunal Pandya and Dube constructed a welcome stand that steadied the situation for a while. After Pandya’s fall, Axar stepped out to bat and along with Dube changed the complexion of the game. The duo launched an assault on the South African bowlers in their partnership of 121 runs from 97 balls. Dube finished unbeaten on 79 from 60 balls (3 fours, 6 sixes) while Axar added 60 not out from 36 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes). India A ended up with a hefty total of 327/6 in 47 overs.
South Africa A failed to put together a concrete start as Chahal snapped Janneman Malan in the seventh over itself. Reeza Hendricks waged a lone battle with his fellow partners falling away. Khaya Zondo and Heinrich Klaasen provided ample support but failed to make it count. Hendricks reached a ton and was dismissed in the 39th over before piling up 110 runs for himself.
Chahal picked up a five-for while conceding 47 runs. Axar snared two with his fellow left-arm spinner Krunal taking one. Deepak Chahar and Khaleel Ahmed also took a wicket each. South Africa A got as far as 258 all out in 45 overs. Second ODI will be played at the same venue on Saturday (31st August).
That’s that from the 1st One Day against South Africa A as India A win by 69 runs. A 5-wkt haul for @yuzi_chahal ?
