In the next decade, the IPL will expand to 12 teams, predicts Star Sports’ CEO
It is official. The two new IPL franchises that will take part in the 2022 edition of the tournament are Lucknow and Ahmedabad. While the Lucknow franchise was bought by the RPSG Group for a whopping sum of INR 7090 Crores, the Ahmedabad franchise was pouched by the CVC Capital Partners for INR 5625 Crores.
And now, Freddie Wilde, the co-author of the book Cricket 2.0 has tweeted about what the CEO of Star Sports, Sanjog Gupta thinks about the expansion of the IPL. Wilde has tweeted an extract from his book.
Gupta had already spoken about the expansion of the IPL into a 10-team affair. Gupta had even added that the expansion of the IPL is for the good of Indian cricket.
“I think two new IPL teams for sure. There cannot be a better time for the IPL to expand for the good of Indian cricket, for maximizing value, and for fans. It is absolutely the right time for the IPL to expand,” Gupta had stated about the expansion of the tournament.
The IPL could become a three-month tournament: Sanjog Gupta
Sanjog Gupta also added that over a period of 10 years, the IPL might have 12 teams featuring in it, and the tournament might be played over a three- and half-month period.
“Over a ten-year period, maybe 12 teams. With 10 teams, it should expand by at least two and half weeks. With 12 teams potentially a month extra or maybe more than a month. A two-month tournament becomes a three, three, and half month tournament,” Gupta had revealed.
Gupta had also added that the IPL might follow in the footsteps of Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association where regular season matches are held.
