I want to win another or two more World Cups for West Indies: Andre Russell
West Indies star all-rounder Andre Russell is determined to represent West Indies in the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup, slated to start in Australia in October this year. The powerful all-rounder played his last T20I match for the Men in Maroon in the 2021 T20 World Cup against Australia.
The right-handed batter smashed an unbeaten 18 off seven balls in that match but his side went on to lose that contest. Since then, Russell has not been seen in the international arena, but he actively participates in several franchise-based domestic leagues around the world.
We have families and we have to make sure that we give our best opportunity while we have one career: Andre Russell
“I always want to play and give back. But at the end of the day, if we are not agreeing on certain terms…they have to respect my terms as well. At the end of the day, it is what it is. We have families and we have to make sure that we give our best opportunity while we have one career,” Russell told Sky Sports.
“It’s not like I can start over again. I’m 34 and I want to win another World Cup – or two more – for West Indies because at the end of the day, I’m here now, and I’m just taking it day by day,” he added.
The star all-rounder has played a total of 67 T20I matches for his country and was a prominent member of the West Indies side when they lifted the T20 World Cup trophy in 2012 and 2016. At present, Russell is playing in 2022 The Hundred competition and will return to the West Indies to represent the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) starting this month.
Meanwhile, West Indies head selector Desmond Haynes has suggested good performances during CPL will play a vital role for the players to get selected in the West Indies squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. “If there is a competition that is run by the West Indies (and) somebody is playing well, I think his name should really come up for selection,” Haynes said recently.
