How Punia’s father gave her Kohli’s example after mother’s demise
India is currently battling the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and several people have lost their near and dear ones due to the deadly virus. Indian opener Priya Punia too had to go through a lot as she lost her mother a few days back due to COVID-19. The 24-year-old cricketer took the loss in her stride and decided to be with India who are going to feature in an all-format tour to England.
India’s ODI skipper Mithali Raj has lent her support to Punia who has gone through a lot in these tough times. Punia’s mother has always encouraged her to play cricket and was always supportive of her daughter’s passion to represent India. Punia’s father Surendra opened what the family went through in the past few days.
Speaking to the Times of India, Punia’s father Surendra recalled how his wife’s health deteriorated.
“She was doing fine, but after oxygen supply disturbance, her oxygen level dropped, and had to be put on ventilator support. But we couldn’t save her,” Priya’s father said.
When Priya Punia’s father taught her an important lesson
Surendra who is also the coach of Punia wanted her daughter to take an important lesson and move on from it by staying stronger. He gave her the example of Virat Kohli and stated to follow the same path.
“I inspired Priya. I told her that Virat Kohli had gone to play Ranji Trophy after his father’s death. This is a very difficult time for us, but we need to be mentally strong. There will be many occasions in life when you have to fight challenges and move forward. Priya understands this and she told me that, Papa I am ready to represent India,” he added.
Punia penned a heart-touching note to her late mother on her official Instagram handle stating how her mother always motivated her to stay strong and positive.
The Indian men’s and women’s team are currently in Mumbai serving their mandatory 10 days quarantine period, before flying to England for the series. The women’s team will kick off their UK leg by playing a four-day Test match at Bristol followed by three ODIs and three T20 matches.
