Highest team totals in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) is a Test series played between India and Australia and it is named after two of the most renowned cricketers and former skippers Sunil Gavaskar from India and Allan Border from Australia. The first-ever match in this series was played way back in the year 1996 and since then there have been many instances of both sides managing to post some mammoth totals on the board and the top ones appear in this list.

Let’s take a look at the highest team totals in the history of BGT:

3. India (657/7d)

During the second of the three-match series in Kolkata, Australia batted first and posted 445 on the board. In reply, the home side managed to score only 171 with Glenn McGrath picking up four wickets. Following on, team India did the unthinkable and scored a massive 657/7 d in their second innings. VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid played memorable knocks of 281 and 180 respectively as India won by 171 runs. The Aussies got bowled out for 212 as Harbhajan Singh snared six scalps in the final innings of the game.

2.Australia (659/4d)

The Kangaroos hold the record for the second-highest team total in the BGT. They achieved the feat in the second of the four-match series at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground in 2012. The visitors batted first and got bowled out for just 191. In reply, the hosts posted a mammoth 659/4d on the board in their first innings. Captain Michael Clarke played a sensational innings of 329* while Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey also struck 134 and 150* respectively. Team India got out for 400 in their second innings. The Australians sealed the contest by an innings and 68 runs and took a 2-0 lead in the series.

1.India (705/7d)

India tops the list for the highest total, with their record 705/7d in Sydney in 2004. During the fourth and final Test of the series, the tourists batted first and posted a massive total on the board courtesy of a special double century from master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. He hammered 241* while middle-order batter Laxman continued his love affair with the Aussies as he amassed 178. In reply, the Kangaroos scored 474 in their first innings with Justin Langer and Simon Katich hitting centuries. India managed to score 211/2d in their second innings with the match ending in a draw.
