Highest successful run chases in ODIs
Over the years, ODI cricket has seen several high-scoring encounters with players showing their batting prowess and entertaining the crowd. Most often the team who has posted a big total on the board tends to win the game, but there have been several instances where the chasing team has shown immense character and went on to win the game. Here are the three highest successful run chases in ODI cricket.
3. 364 – England vs West Indies (2019)
Universe Boss Chris Gayle thrashed the English bowlers in Bridgetown in 2019. The left-handed batter smacked 12 sixes and three fours to register his 24th ODI century. His innings helped the home team to post a total of 360/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Despite chasing a big total, England batters did not stutter as centuries from Jason Roy and Joe Root helped the visiting team to chase down with six wickets in hand.
2. 372 – South Africa vs Australia (2016)
South Africa has a knack for surprising everyone and they did that once again after chasing a big total of 372 runs against Australia in 2016. Several South Africa batters got a start in their innings, but the hero for the Proteas side was David Miller, who stroked 118 runs off 79 balls and helped his side to victory.
1. 438 – South Africa vs Australia (2006)
One of the most iconic matches played in ODI history also includes South Africa and Australia with the Aussie team again at the receiving end. On the back of Ricky Ponting’s magnificent 164, the visitors posted the then-highest-ever ODI score. Chasing 435, Herschelle Gibbs thrashed the Aussie bowling line-up as he scored 175 runs and with the help of some other African batters, the home team chased down the total easily in the end.
