Highest successful chases in men’s T20s
Pakistan Super League 2023 has entered the knockout stages after intense encounters in 30 group-stage matches this season. The last few games, particularly at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, have seen big scoring records.
South African star Rilee Rossouw broke his own record to register the fastest century in PSL history during Multan Sultans’ game against Peshawar Zalmi. However, his record lasted less than 24 hours as his teammate Usman Khan recorded the fastest century in the following game against Quetta Gladiators.
Multan Sultans have managed to post 200-plus totals in their last three games in the PSL 2023 but they also conceded 200-plus in these games. They shocked the cricketing world by chasing 243 runs against the Zalmi and that is now among the top-three highest successful chases in T20 history. So, let’s take a look at the top-three highest successful chases in T20 so far.
242 – St Kitts and Nevis Patriots vs Jamaica Tallawahs, CPL 2019
During the seventh match of the Caribbean Premier League 2019, Chris Gayle smashed 116 off 62 and Chadwick Walton added 73 off 36 to help Jamaica Tallawahs score 241/4 against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. But a 71 off 40 from Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis’ 53 off 18 helped St Kitts and Nevis Patriots chase the target in just 18.5 overs to register a six-wicket win.
243 – Bulgaria vs Serbia, 2022 and Multan Sultans vs Peshawar Zalmi, PSL 2023
Bulgaria pulled off an amazing chase during a Sofia Twenty20 clash against Serbia in June 2022. Serbian wicketkeeper batter Leslie Dunbar smashed 117 off 50 to post 242/5 in 20 overs while batting first. But it was not enough as Bulgaria managed to chase the total with six wickets and two balls remaining. Wicketkeeper-batter Saim Hussain top-scored with 71 off 24 and Kevin D’Souza added 66 off 27 to record a historic chase.
Peshawar Zalmi recorded two 240-plus totals while batting first but surprisingly lost both fixtures in PSL 2023. In their ninth group-stage match against Multan Sultans, captain Babar Azam smashed 73 off just 39 to help the Zalmi score 242/6 while batting first. But Multan Sultans easily chased the target with five balls remaining with Rilee Rossouw smashing 121 off 51.
244 – Australia vs New Zealand T20I 2018
Australia won the Trans-Tasman Twenty20 Tri-Series 2017/18 by winnings all four group-stage games with a dominant performance. In their last group-stage match against neighbors, they recorded the highest successful chase. Martin Guptill’s 105 off 54 helped the Kiwis score 243/6 while batting first. But captain David Warner smashed 59 off 24 and D’Arcy Short added a quick 76 off 44 to chase the total with five wickets and seven balls remaining.
