Highest scores by Australians in India
India-Australia has been one of the best rivalries in Test cricket. Over the past few years, the competition between the two sides has got intense as the teams have matched each other in terms of both talent and skill. While India have recently improved their performances in Australia, the Aussies have found it difficult to perform against India in India since the past 19 years. Only a few Australian batters have stood tall against Indian bowling and played big knocks in their 76-year-long Test history. On that note, let’s take a look at the three highest scores by Australians in India:
3. Usman Khawaja 180 in Ahmedabad, 2023
The star opener made a sensational comeback in Test cricket in 2022 as he finished as the third-highest run scorer of the year. The southpaw has carried his form in 2023 as well as he scored a sensational 180 in the first innings of the recently concluded fourth Test between India and Australia. It is the third-highest score by an Australian in India, which helped his side post 480 runs in the first innings.
2. Matthew Hayden 203 in Chennai, 2001
With the series at level in 2001, Matthew Hayden played a sensational knock of 203 in the third Test in Chennai as Australia put up a strong batting performance, scoring 391 in the first innings. Hayden’s innings was studded with 15 fours and six sixes as he became the second Australian to score a double hundred in India.
1. Dean Jones 210 in Chennai, 1986
Australia’s tour of India in 1986 began with a dramatic fashion as Australia started the tour with a breath-taking batting performance as they posted a massive 574/7 in the first innings. Australian batting was led by Dean Jones, who scored a brilliant 210, battling with severe heat and dehydration. He had to be hospitalised after the innings ended, however, that was not before he became the first Australian to score a double hundred in India. The Test match is etched in the history books forever as it’s the second and last Test to end in a tie.
