Glenn Maxwell confident of making a return to test squad post The Ashes
Glenn Maxwell has played international cricket for the Australian side for almost a decade, but the 32-year-old all-rounder has featured in only 7 Test matches for the kangaroos. While Maxwell is a regular name in the Australian side in limited-overs cricket, he has not played a Test match for the kangaroos in the last 4 years.
Australia has a long subcontinental journey lined up next year in Test cricket, where they will play against India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, and Maxwell is eyeing a return to the Australian Test side for those tours.
The right-handed batsman also added that if a player is doing well for his country across various formats, then he will find a place in the side as he is the right man to accomplish the job.
“It’s going to be hard to get any red-ball cricket (this summer), but I’ve said before when switching between formats that if you’re going well for your country, you can be the right man for the job. I’m still looking at those subcontinent tours next year to be a real possibility,” said Maxwell as quoted by cricket.com.au.
Maxwell further admitted that there are stages in Test match cricket when a player should bat for longer periods of time, and added that he has developed the required skills to adapt to the longest format of the game.
“There is obviously a stage where you need to knuckle down in red-ball cricket and bat for a longer period of time, and that’s just a mindset thing. I feel like I’ve got the game to adapt to that these days. When you get a bit older, you start to know your game a little bit better and understand what the team needs. I feel like I’m in a really good place at the moment with my game and I feel like it’d be an easier transition these days,” said Maxwell.
I want to be in a good space and will try to help Australia win the T20 World Cup: Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell also said that he is not thinking of cutting down on limited-overs cricket in pursuit of his Test ambitions, especially with the T20 World Cup around the corner. The 32-year-old right-hander concluded by stating that if he plays his role well in the Australian side in the multi-nation tournament, then the kangaroos will experience plenty of success.
“I don’t think you make a decision like that with such big tournaments around the corner. It’s a great thought in theory, but I don’t think that would be doing the right thing by anyone.
Yes, it’d be great to play Test cricket but the best thing for Australian cricket at the moment is me being in a really good space to try and win this World Cup. If I’m going well enough, hopefully I’ll be selected for the next World Cup and hopefully, if I play my role in that team, we can have plenty of success. It’s hard to knock back a format when there’s some World Cups on the line,” concluded Maxwell.
