Gill opens up about his experience of batting with Kohli & Rohit Sharma
Young India Test opener Shubman Gill has impressed fans and former cricketers alike with his attacking batting. The 21-year-old was handed debut during India’s historic 2-1 series Down Under in the year 2020-21. Gill scored a crucial 91 to set things up for Rishabh Pant who finished the match in Brisbane. Since that epic innings, Gill has been the regular choice opener for India in Tests.
In his short Test career so far, Gill has scored 378 runs in seven Tests and is all set to open with Rohit Sharma in the ICC World Test Championship final (WTC) against New Zealand to be played in England and a five-match Test series to be followed against the host nation.
Recently, the elegant right-hand batter opened up about the captaincy styles of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and pointed the contrasting approach of the two modern-day greats.
“Virat bhai tells me to play fearlessly whenever we speak about the game. He speaks about mindset a lot, that you have to be in good frame of mind when you go out to bat and shares his experiences.”
“And when I am batting with Rohit bhai, we usually discuss where the bowlers will bowl, what the situation is like, depending on that when to take risk or not,” Gill added as reported in Latestly.
Gill looking forward to showing his class ahead of the WTC final
After playing the England series, Gill was part of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) representing Kolkata Knight Riders. The 21-year-old though could not get going as he scored 132 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 117.85. He was widely criticized for not playing aggressively at the top which put undue pressure on the likes of Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell.
Gill’s contribution at the top will be crucial for India as they aim to finally end the ICC trophy draught which they last won while playing the ICC Champions Trophy in the year 2013. The WTC final is set to begin on June 18 at Southampton and the right-handed batter would be eager to get back among the runs and provide India a good platform alongside Rohit Sharma.
